How competitive are SoCal hotshot crews?

Hoping to get on one as a seasonal next summer, I’m just having a hard time figuring out what the deal is. Some people make it sound like half of them are understaffed and losing their type 1 status, others make it sound like it’s impossible to get on one of these crews. Just looking for any insight into how difficult it might be to get hired.

What is fighting fire in SoCal actually like?

Seems to get a lot of hate on here so I’m wondering what the deal is

Edit: if anyone actually enjoys it would be good to get that perspective too

R5 hotshot crews

Wanting to make the switch from R1 to R5 next year. Anyone work on/familiar with these crews? bear divide, texas canyon, los padres, del rosa, el dorado. Just curious what the hiring process looks like out there, PT, how competitive they are compared to shot crews in other regions

Fought fire in my mid twenties, 2 seasons on a contract crew, 2 seasons on a district handcrew. Left for 5 years to pursue other things, decided I want to come back at 32 and make a career out of it. I’m just wondering if the time out of fire will be a big deterrent for getting on a shot crew my first season back.

My plan for next season is to apply to every crew in R1 at the end of this season, and call/swing by to introduce myself in the fall. Should I cast a wider net? Or is there anything else you’d recommend doing to give me a better chance? This is a long ways away but it’s something I’m serious about and want to plan for.

Moved here recently and want to get out of the house to work more, curious if anyone knows any decent coffee shops or co working spaces? Haven’t ventured around too much and have only seen very packed places with loud music so just looking for any recommendations

Just wanted to get some advice on the crew. From what ive heard they are highly selective with a low turnover rate. I love Missoula and the goal is to eventually get on with them. I worked on a district handcrew for 4 years, left fire for 5 years doing a corporate job that I hated, and now I'm deciding to go back into fire as a career starting next summer.

Do you think its even worth it to apply for next season due to being out of fire for so long? Or should I go back to a district and apply the following year. Any other advice on getting on with them would be greatly appreciated.

I worked on a district handcrew from 24-28. Left to go work in tech for better money/work life balance. Realized recently this is not the path I want to go, hate sitting in front of a computer all day doing meaningless work, miss the fulfillment and camaraderie of fire. Think I can swing getting a perm job by 36 if I go back next summer. I’m physically in great shape, workout regularly, run marathons. I’m just concerned the age factor is gonna be an issue, both physically and for career trajectory. Wondering if any of you got back into fire in your 30s or have advice on this.
