Adolescent dog that's energetic but easily overstimulated? Out and backs are your friend!

For everyone who feels like they can't get satisfy their teen dog's physical exercise needs because the dog reaches their mental limit before they tire physically: I feel you, I've been you.

I'd stopped walking in my neighborhood and instead started taking my dog for decompression walks in nature. This helped a little, but I noticed this pattern where after 45-60 minutes she started becoming MORE hyped and frantic. She'd be unable to think clearly for the rest of the walk. After coming homing, she'd crash and nap super hard in her crate for a couple of hours. But then the rest of the day she'd be restless and on-edge, barking at every little noise.

So walks were kept to 40 minutes max. It didn't feel right - she's an adolescent Aussie, she needs exercise - but it helped to avoid these insane outburts so we stuck to it. Until I accidentally stumbled upon the magical solution: take the same route back instead of walking in a loop.

It's been SO helpful. Taking the same route back means that she's already familiarized herself with the path and all the scents. She doesn't have to take in as many new things anymore and the environment isn't as distracting anymore, which makes it easier for her tired little brain to still respond to my cues when necessary.

She gets to explore and move her body for longer because her brain doesn't melt as quickly as when we do a loop. Afterwards, she'ss better able to settle on her own because she's more tired but less mentally drained. We've been doing it for six months now and have been able to increase the duration of both our out-and-backs and our regular loops thanks to this.

I can highly recommend you give it a try!
