Buying a used car

I'm thinking of buying a used car. I was told that Korea has pretty strict laws protecting buyers, namely that any major defects that are found in the car within 30 days or 2000 km of purchase need to be paid for repairs by the used car dealer. That means that if I take the car straight from the dealer's lot to a trusted mechanic for a checkup, then any major issues with the engine are the responsibility of the dealer to correct. For a guy who's clueless about cars like me, this is a great relief.

Could anyone confirm this law exists, maybe share about your experience in having had to act upon it? As mentioned I am pretty clueless about cars so nervous about buying one which I haven't had a chance to get a trusted mechanic to look at, which I won't be able to do.
