Question about societal norm on sharing escalators with the opposite gender

Edit: *Elevator

Guys, I am really sorry if this is a controversial topic to ask about, but I wanted to know what's the actual unwritten rule on entering an escalator when there is only one local lady (or say 2-3 of them) inside and then there's me, an expat South Asian man (or any man for the matter who's of similar age group)?

I just encountered a situation like this today, and the whole time she felt uneasy/anxious and even dropped her stuff on the floor.

For context I've been in this situation before but normally I don't think too much about it or one of us is in a call or smth + when I'm not exhausted or sweaty I do use stairs if its there.

I sort of feel bad about myself for letting this happen (or am I over-thinking it idk) , but is this my fault? Should I always stay away/wait longer from such escalators even if thats the only way up or down for the building?

I'm still ruminating about it😕
