1819 Potosí 8 Reales Ferdinand VII - Found in father's collection in Chile
Hello everyone,
My father recently gifted me this 8 Reales coin from 1812 from his collection here in Chile, South America. I believe it was minted in Potosí (current Bolivia) during the reign of Ferdinand VII of Spain.
Details I can read on the coin:
- Obverse: FERDIN·VII · DEI·GRATIA · 1812
- Reverse: HISPAN·IND·REX with the crowned Shield of Spain, Columns of Hercules with PLUS·ULTRA, and what appears to be P·J mintmark (Potosí assayers)
- Denomination: 8 Reales (visible on reverse)
The coin shows natural wear consistent with its age — surface scratches, organic patina, and edge irregularities typical of colonial minting of the period.
My questions:
- Does it look authentic to experienced eyes?
- What would be a fair market value in current condition?
- Is there anything specific I should look for to confirm authenticity?
Thank you very much for any help!
