Small Boutique Investment Management Firms / Hedge Funds

Hi All,

Does anyone on here work at a very small boutique buy side investment management firm? I am interviewing with a very small boutique firm that specializes in small/mid cap research. The fund consists of several MF’s, institutional SMA’s, and long/short hedge funds. Looking to get any insight on what it’s like working at a small firm like this. I would be doing trading with some equity research (not covering as many names as a full time research analyst). I am currently in wealth mgmt at a very reputable firm.

Backround / context: 23yo non-target school graduate. Mainly doing trade execution/asset transfers for PWM at my current job.

Any advice / insight is greatly appreciated!

Career Advice: Wealth Mgmt at GS or trading/research at a small hedge fund

I’m currently working in wealth management at Goldman Sachs. My role consists of supporting advisors by providing trade execution and handling a number of asset transfers for high net worth clients. I recently received interest from a very small boutique hedge fund that specializes in small cap research. The role would mainly consist of trading and equity research, with a little bit of operational tasks and performance reporting mixed in. This fund has been around for years and has a solid track record. They manage several mutual funds and long-short hedge funds.

I am at the later stages of the interview process and I believe am pretty close to receiving an offer. The pay would be significantly higher than what I make currently, based on what I have heard for starting pay at this fund.

Just looking for an advice from people on here if they think this decision would be worth leaving Goldman Sachs. I am trying to think long term, and i’m not sure which would be the bets to go with.

For context, I am 23 and graduated a non-target college May of 2025.
