I can't even remember what I did yesterday, let alone my dreams)

I've started a dream journal, but I can only remember that I've seen the dream, and 2-3 flashbacks.

Is there any technique that can help make memory stronger, or I should just keep up with my dream journal until it gets better?

I'm using that technic when I'm covering my mouth and nose with hand, and asking myself: can I breath or not. If don't - so I'm not dreaming.

I made to my first lucid dream that way, and woke up instantly. Don't know why, but I dropped that idea just after this experience. I was 23 at the moment, and it took a week to made that kind of progress. I tried again few times for couple of years after, but got no results. Now I'm almost 30, and I wondering if still enough neuroplastic to do that at that age.
