Hi there, I’m a consultant working for a boutique consulting firm. I have been here for 4 years. We are fully remote and can work from anywhere in the world. Health, vision, and dental insurance paid for. 90% billable requirement but we get 40 hours of time for L&D offset and 16 hours of volunteer time a year. Unlimited PTO as long as you meet your hours requirement. I regularly work with top 4 tech clients and am specializing in data center work which is popping off. My pay is 76k + variable bonus (last year was like 5k) and they do not offer a 401k match.
I got an offer at a huge firm. I’d be doing about the same thing that I’m doing now for a company with 20k employees but my actual department is way smaller than my current firm. They offered me 87k + 18k bonus + ESOP + 3.25% 401k match. I’d have to be in the office nearly everyday and PTO + sick time only is 15 days total. The firm is super well known for engineering and my current firm is super well known for the specialty i am in.
I’m super conflicted. The total comp for the new position is well over 100k but there is no flexibility and it’s a very rigid company… the team I’d be working on seems more flexible than the overall company. I really want to be making more money and feel like I’m behind on retirement due to no 401k match but I’m like is the money worth losing the work life balance? For reference I’m 29 with 30k in a 401k and 30k in a Roth IRA. If money wasn’t an issue and I was making more at my current firm I wouldn’t even be considering leaving… What would you do in my situation? Should I bite the bullet and give up my flexibility for money and the guarantee that I could retire comfortable by 55 with my new job? Or should I keep my flexibility with lower pay and overall comp with my current job?
