I'm not an LD debater, but was very curious, is 1AR theory the norm? Also is pre-empting 1AR theory the norm? How do these debates play out usually?

I'm curious about categories and if an equal number of contestants from each category advances.

i.e. on this subreddit it seems a lot of people are interested in Philosophy Questions. Does that mean that more people who did Philosophy Questions get shortlisted? Or do they choose an equal number of people from each category?
