One of the new videos they have up. If K had teeth… boy oh boy!!! It would have been a different video! He got her Good. She gives them things to fascinate them and then takes it away. That’s what happened here. It confuses them and makes them frustrated. Now K is safe for her to continue doing this. IMO allegedly

The Rebranding of "Lando Nation": Why this "Primate Refuge" is actually a commercial pet operation (with USDA receipts)

Hi all, most of us are familiar with Lando Nation.

Over the past year and a half, they appeared to have undergone a massive rebranding. If you look at their website or their current social media pages, they now claim to be a 501(c)(3) non-profit called the "Lando Nation Primate Refuge," dedicating themselves to "lifelong care," "advocacy," and "transparency". They’ve cleaned up their feeds to showcase "cute" clips set to music, attempting to look like a legitimate sanctuary.

But if you look beneath the superficial surface, the reality tells a completely different story. They are still actively exploiting these animals for profit and promoting the dangerous "pet monkey" narrative.

Legitimate and ethical primate sanctuaries/rescues never allow the public to interact with their primates

A real, accredited primate sanctuary never allows public handling, private encounters, or commercial exploitation. Yet, on their own website platform, Lando Nation explicitly monetizes their animals including charging $85 per person for 1-hour private sessions with their primates.

The toxic hero martyr narrative, savior of pet primates

Their social media still heavily pushes toxic owner-dependency narratives, such as text overlays stating, "I am everything she knows... I am everything she needs." This forces a wild animal into a human-baby dynamic for social media clout, and further promotes the damaging idea that primates make suitable pets.

USDA inspection paperwork completely shatters the illusion of this business as being an ethical and professional rescue operation. The reports explicitly document a severe lack of knowledge regarding primate husbandry and multiple dangerous public safety failures.

Inspectors flagged a video the owner posted to TikTok where she intentionally taunted and teased a capuchin with a small lock, giving it and repeatedly snatching it away, specifically to film how mad the animal would get. The USDA noted this causes "mental distress" and hypervigilance, stating the owner “lacks adequate knowledge of the species she maintains”.

Imagine telling a USDA veterinary medical officer that you didn't understand why it was a problem to play with your monkey in this way. And the officer responding that you basically have no clue whatsoever about the species you own. Good lord.

The USDA noted a critical violation where a child visiting the home was bitten by an unrestrained capuchin monkey, causing broken skin and bruising. The owners had simply opened a door and let the monkey freely enter the room with the child without a leash or barrier. Public Handling and Distance (Section 2.131(c)(1)) requires exhibitors to maintain "sufficient distance and/or barriers" between the primate and the public to ensure safety. Numerous pseudo-sanctuaries and petting zoos routinely violate this law by allowing paying customers unrestricted access and handling of primates during paid encounters.

Allowing small children to handle a highly unpredictable wild animal

Note the clip showing a toddler running and crawling around a kitchen with a capuchin tightly clinging to her hair and back. At the end of the clip, the environment becomes chaotic as the child screams/jumps, creating the exact high-stress trigger environment that leads to defensive primate attacks.

Exposing primates to a chaotic and stressful environment, handled by multiple individuals

Note the monkey being passed around in public, interacting with a young girl, and chewing on retail stuffed animals in a chaotic environment.

The report also cites them for streaming live videos showing spider monkeys interacting with the public without direct control, and driving around with a loose capuchin in the owner's lap at a fast-food drive-thru instead of using a secure transport enclosure.

Pet primates at drive-thru windows are a staple for vloggers, and a clear violation of Federal regulations

Videos of pet primates being driven around in public and made to interact with personnel at drive-thru windows are a staple among unethical primate owners.

While state and local regulations may vary, any pet primate owner in the possession of a USDA class C exhibitor license is bound by Federal laws. The reason why the USDA is so strict about this is due to primates being highly unpredictable. If a window is rolled down at a drive-thru, a loose monkey can easily escape, dart into a fast-food window, or reach out and bite a worker (as happened at an Alabama Starbucks in January 2025). The USDA mandates that primates must be in secondary secure transport enclosures at all times during transit to prevent escaping or injuring others. In addition, non-human primates carry severe diseases transmissible to humans (and vice versa). Exposing a monkey directly to service workers handling food introduces a massive public health hazard.

Under the Animal Welfare Act, a non-human primate must be contained within a primary enclosure (a secure transport cage or crate) at all times while in transit. The USDA specifically cited Lando Nation because the owner was \"holding one of her capuchins in her lap and not in a primary enclosure\" at a drive-thru window. The inspector noted that failure to contain an animal in transit can result in the animal escaping or injuring itself or others.

A common mindset found among many pet primate owners

When concerned citizens call them out on social media, their "refuge" facade drops instantly. In a Facebook comment thread, a user pointed out that monkeys don't belong in shopping centers and that true rescues provide a natural life. Lando Nation's defensive response? “whatever you say! You do what you want with your monkey and she‘ll do what she wants with her monkeys!”

Don't let the new website or the "refuge" label fool you. Lando Nation has simply rebranded their commercial pet monkey operation to escape criticism, while continuing the exact same dangerous, exploitative practices behind closed doors.

Let's keep exposing these sham "sanctuaries" for what they really are.
