I feel like every time I plan a trip, I end up getting pulled toward the same super touristy spots.
Like if you go to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, everything points you toward Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Which is cool, but it never really feels like the actual place.
Recently I ended up exploring more of the southern side of the Smokies (Western NC area), and it felt completely different. Way less crowded, smaller towns, more local spots, slower pace. Honestly felt like what I imagined the Smokies were supposed to be.
It got me thinking…
What’s the most authentic, non-touristy place or experience you’ve had while traveling?
Like something that made you feel like you actually understood the place instead of just visiting it.
Would love some ideas because I’m trying to travel differently going forward.
