Coursework Master's students at UQ – what GPA did you graduate with, and how important has it been?
Hi everyone,
I'm currently doing a coursework Master's at UQ and was hoping to get a realistic perspective on GPAs.
Most posts I come across seem to be from people with very high GPAs (6.5–7.0), so I'm curious what the average experience is.
If you've completed (or are currently doing) a coursework Master's at UQ, would you mind sharing:
- Your approximate graduating/current GPA (roughly is fine)
- Your field (Science, Engineering, IT, Health, etc.)
- Whether maintaining a high GPA was difficult
I'm also wondering:
- How important has your GPA actually been for industry jobs?
- For those who went into research or a PhD, what GPA did you have, or what GPA is generally considered competitive?
- Is there a GPA threshold that you think is worth maintaining (e.g. 5.0, 5.5, 6.0), after which research experience, internships and publications become more important?
- If you failed one or more courses during your Master's, was that relatively common? Did it have any lasting impact on your career, research opportunities, or PhD applications, or was it something you were able to recover from?
I'd really appreciate hearing from people with a range of GPAs—not just the high achievers. Thanks!
