Im a bit at a loss as what to do with my pooch. Bit of background he will be 6y/old this dec, last sept he had his first seizure after a couple more seizures he was then placed onto Epiphen.
Liver function levels were elevated after 1 month on epiphan so he was taken off this an put onto levetericetam, seizures started again so epilease was also then introduced, seizures still continued so he placed back onto a low dose of Epiphen (30mg) alongside level and epilease.
We went 2 months seizures free at this point dec to feb, however seizures then started again in feb 2026. Epiphen was increased to 60mg in feb, leve and epilease stayed the same ( 750mg leve every 8 hours and 750mg epilease once a day). Since increasing Epiphen he has had a seizure on 16th March we then went 25 days seizures free.
Seizures have now started again we have had one on 10th April, 19th April and 28th April. Vet is concerned that medication works for a short while when increased but not long term. Before Epiphen is increased vet wants to do blood tests to check what effect it’s had on the liver, he then wishes to speak to the neurologist to ensure nothing is being missed. Ultimately what I’m asking is could my dog have a really bad case of idiopathic epilepsy or from others experience could this be something else going on causing seizures?
I’m so worried we are going to lose him in the most horrific way because the last seizure was quite intense in comparison to any he has had before. He was yelping throughout much more drool that normal and once he stopped fitting he laid panting like he couldn’t catch his breath. There was also a lot of head and eye twitching movements post ictal which has not happened before.
