TOEFL Speaking - Take an Interview Tip: Use Contrast to Make Your Answer Stronger
One way to improve your TOEFL Speaking answer is to show contrast.
When a question gives you two options, don’t only explain why your choice is good. Also show why the other option is less useful for you.
This makes your answer sound more thoughtful because it shows you understand both sides.
For example, imagine the question asks whether you prefer an online course or a course where you interact with teachers in person.
A strong answer could be:
“I would prefer a fully online course because it gives me more flexibility. First, I have a very busy schedule. For example, I run my own business and teach online, so my students often need to schedule sessions with me. If I had to commute to a classroom course, I would lose time that I could use for work or study. Second, I usually feel more comfortable when I learn online. For instance, when I took an online marketing course, I could pause the video, get water, grab my notebook, and use my highlighters. In a classroom, I would not have the same freedom. That is why I prefer online courses.”
Notice what this answer does:
-It clearly chooses one side.
-It gives two reasons.
-It uses personal examples.
-It explains the benefit of the chosen option.
-It also shows the weakness of the other option.
To master this for your TOEFL:
First, practice slowly and carefully without a timer.
Repeat this pattern until it feels natural.
Then add the timer later.
Do you prefer studying alone or with a group?
I hope this helps 💪
