Canada Soccer statement
Reading this, and the fact that they even made this statement, tells me that it’s obvious that the Whitecaps owners are legitimately trying to keep the team in Vancouver.
So many misconceptions out there. This is a very realistic look at where they are in the league, and the standings are generally reflected by this, with a few exceptions of course. They still punch above their weight - extremely well run under Axel Schuster, but the investment has also been good since he’s proven what he can do.
Hopefully some new owners can figure out the off field stuff and see what a diamond they have with how the club operates on the field now.
I understand most people are feeling down after an exhausting week.
I beg of you not to give up. I’ve heard on good authority this is not over. There are interested local groups. We need to keep supporting the team, or it will look just look less and less appealing to any new ownership groups.
That’s the tiny part that we can play in this. Keep fighting the good fight.
MLS provided a statement later on Thursday evening.
“Major League Soccer remains focused on working with the Whitecaps and local stakeholders to determine whether a sustainable long-term path for the club can be achieved.
“While in Vancouver for the FIFA Congress, Commissioner Don Garber met yesterday with Premier of British Columbia David Eby. He also had the opportunity to speak with Premier Eby, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, British Columbia Deputy Minister of Tourism Silas Brownsey, and PavCo President and CEO Rehana Din during the Congress today.
“Those conversations were constructive, and we appreciate the time and engagement from local leadership. MLS and club representatives will continue discussions in the days ahead, and league leadership plans to return to Vancouver in the coming weeks for additional meetings.”
Lost in everything else, but this is a really great initiative. A bunch of bars have signed up to show every single away game. In the club’s entire MLS existence, I can’t remember that ever being the case before. It’s too bad about all of this negative talk because things have never been better to be a Whitecaps fan.
