Essays: spent at least 3 weeks on all + got as much review as possible. My earliest ones (RSI) were genuinely terrible, but by the time I got to the spring they were pretty good. Tried to focus on my love for my diff communities and how I serve them with my leadership/CS skills.

LORs: Pretty good, I think 😅 I've worked with almost all of my recommenders in some capacity, so we have good relationships.

Results 💔

NYO-USA: rejected. Expected, but it still hurt (this was my 2nd time applying)

RSI: rejected lmao

MITES: rejected

State senate page program: accepted and committed! Beyond excited for this.

Simons SRP: rejected

Clark Scholars: rejected

Carnegie Mellon Precollege: accepted!

Cornell Precollege (online): accepted w/ full scholarship!!!

Governor's school: accepted!

Takeaways: I had planned to apply to a whole bunch more (SEAP, LLrise, Wolfram, Penn Engineering, BWSI, LLcipher, sci-MI, DBound) but I got into gov school before those were due so I saw no point lol. I'm def very thankful for where I did get into. I realized halfway through my Clark application that I was also interested in pubpol research, so my biggest recommendation to any future summer program hopefuls is to do a lot of reflection early on, before you start applying to places. I probably would have applied to a lot less research and some more advocacy-based programs if I had reflected earlier.

Good luck to you all!

Hey everyone! Hope you're doing well.

I'm finalizing my college list, intended recommenders, etc., right now and I have a bit of a dilemma.

For context, I'm a junior from a decently competitive HS (avg SAT 1330, ACT 29) applying for computer science and public policy at HYPSM and a variety of T20s.

I know who I'm asking for my first recommendation, but I'm not sure who to ask for my second one.

My best options are:

  • My IB Math teacher (I do well in his class + I had him for Calc in sophomore yr, but he is NOTORIOUS for doing things kinda last-minute and I know very little about the quality of his recommendations)
  • My IB Chem teacher (I do well in his class too + he's been extremely diligent for past recs + he seems like he might be a better rec writer? I honestly don't know)
  • My IB Philosophy teacher (I do well in his class + I've worked with him in a school club for 3 years so he knows me really well + he's written me recs in the past that have gotten me into programs + he is diligent)
  • My 9th grade math teacher (she glazed me when I had her class and still does + I've also worked with her in that same school club for 3 years + she's also a very thorough rec writer.)

To be clear, I absolutely love all of these teachers and have good relationships with them. I also don't mean to attack my math teacher for his habit of being late - it's just a fact.

With that said:

  • Who would you recommend I ask and why?
  • Is it important to have a math, compsci or even STEM-adjacent teacher write me a rec if I'm planning to apply for compsci?
  • Is it frowned upon to ask a 9th grade teacher for a rec?

Thank you!😊😊
