Going against genetics

I don’t really know why I’m posting this, but I felt like I needed to say this somewhere and this feels like the best community to do so. I’m a runner and I just found out that I have really bad genetics with arthritis. My mum recently had to get knee surgery because of severe arthritis and her recovery has been quite challenging. A lot of my family has also had issues with their knees and even I’ve had some minor knee injuries, and I have hypermobility. For a while, I was having second thoughts about continuing running, then sudddenly my mum just asks me “is running really worth it for you anymore knowing you have genetics working against you?”

I don’t really know if it is worth it. But I do know that sometimes, great things can happen to the most unlikely people, just like with David Goggins (and he also had genetics working against him too). There’s something inside me that wants to do the same as well. And I guess this is what’s going to keep me going, even though I’ll probably have to work 10 times harder than everyone else just to stay on my own two feet.
