Gold Star Mothers 1930s
In the 1930s, the US government sponsored trips to France for Gold Star Mothers of WWI soldiers. Black American mothers protested the resulting Jim Crow segregation as they were required to be segregated, sent on inferior ships, with inferior travel conditions and lodging. They were ultimately denied, by the US government, the same travel conditions. Some mothers stayed behind and protested.
In this article, Miss Beasley introduces her Oakland Tribune readers to protests for this second class treatment of mothers whose sons sacrificed it all.
