I’m a computer science major currently working as a computer scientist intern, which is how I received my TS/SCI clearance. After finishing this internship, I’ll be applying to Summer 2027 internships and keeping an eye out for any positions that open.

How common are software or computer science internships that require an active clearance? Would most cleared internships accept someone with a TS/SCI, or do many require a polygraph as well?

I’m currently a sophomore studying CS, and I’m going to be interning in the defense industry next summer. I’m also going through the security clearance process right now.

For people who graduated and now work in defense, government contracting, intelligence, or other cleared tech jobs, how much has having a clearance actually helped you?

Did it make it easier to find jobs, get interviews, hear from recruiters, or have better job security? Does it actually reduce the amount of competition for software engineering or other technical roles?
I’ve seen some older posts about this, but most of them are around four or more years old, so I wanted to hear what the current market is like.

I know having a clearance does not replace technical skills, projects, internships, or interview prep. I’m mainly wondering how valuable it is when you combine it with a CS degree and relevant experience.

I’d also be interested in hearing about any downsides, such as being limited to certain locations, not being able to talk about your work, working with older technology, or having trouble moving into regular private-sector tech jobs later.

I’m a college student and I’m being required to get a TS/SCI clearance for an internship/position next year. I’m trying to understand how to handle friend references on the clearance paperwork.

Most of the friends I would use as references are college friends. They live at various schools during the academic year, but for the rest of the summer they’ll be staying at their home addresses. I know them from college, but they are not physically living at school right now.

For the reference address/contact info, should I list their current summer/home address since that’s where they are actually staying right now, or should I list their college address because that’s the context where I know them from? I don’t want to put anything misleading or cause unnecessary confusion.

Also, how many solid friend references should I realistically have ready? I’ve heard different numbers. I currently have 4 friends who know me well and already said they’re completely fine with me listing them as references.

Any advice from people who have gone through this, especially as college students, would be appreciated.
