Pursuing medicine at 27, how do people manage family and finances?
Hi everyone, first time posting here so bear with me!
I'm a 27-year-old woman seriously considering pursuing medicine and I have a few questions I'd love to get some perspective on.
Finances & working during med school I don't have financial support from family, just my partner, so I'd likely need to work alongside studying. How have others managed this, and is any kind of work-life balance actually achievable?
Starting a family during med school or junior doctor years (this is the big one for me) My partner and I are hoping to start a family soon, and honestly this has made me second-guess everything. I know part-time study isn't really an option, so I'd really love to hear from anyone who has navigated pregnancy or having a baby early in their medical journey. A few specific things I'm wondering:
- Do people typically take a year off, and if so, do you feel like you miss out?
- Is there much support available for parents in med school?
- What about waiting until after med school, is having a baby in your first year or two as a junior doctor more manageable? Is there better support, or is the workload just as difficult?
Medicine has genuinely always felt like my calling, but family is just as important to me, and I'd love to become a mum while I'm still relatively young. Any advice or shared experiences would mean the world.
Thanks so much in advance!
