Retake Strategy to Improve Verbal Baseline
Hello all,
I recently took my GRE on 24th June, 2026 and ended up with the score: 167Q, 158V, 4.5 AWA (total: 325). This was my second attempt, improving upon an earlier score of 314 about 3 years ago (classic edition).
While I'm more or less satisfied with how I fared at Quant (maybe sustained practice of some hard-level questions should be enough), I believe that my Verbal still has some room for improvement.
Given that the programs I'm presently targeting seem to favour applicants of my background with a score of 330-335, I'm now seeking your advice on an effective strategy to ameliorate my weaknesses in Verbal.
For context, I used GregMat's vocab list - went through all groups once, managed to revise a few in the run-up to the actual examination. While I excel at easy-to-medium-level TC, SE & RC, I've been struggling a bit when the adaptive nature of the test kicks in and throws questions, especially those requiring a heavier logical bent of mind - such as assumption, inference (can be dubbed as "critical reasoning") in RC or the 3/2-blankers in TC. Or when you get a very abstract, dense passage in RC that makes one lose focus a bit momentarily. SE is something that I feel I'm generally decent at, since I've had plenty of practise with vocab exposure.
How should I tackle practising under such scenarios? And also keeping in mind that such sections crop up in the latter half of the exam when the mind is fatigued a tad bit.
Most importantly, how much more time should I devote to this endeavour? Mentally, I want to set a deadline of the first week of August, considering that I'm already primed on my fundamentals and don't want to lose the vigour and momentum built over the past several months.
