Career Advice / grad school

Sorry this is a little long and I’m not sure if this is the best place to post this but… I am an environmental science and geography double major with a geospatial specialization going into my senior year of college (in US). I am super interested in a few types of areas that (kind of) overlap but I am not sure of my next steps/ what’s possible. Those areas are atmospheric science, remote sensing, and geospatial analysis.

I want to go to grad school (either masters of PHD) to specialize more into one of these areas and help get my foot in the door through more course work, research, and overall experience.

One problem is I don’t really have any undergrad research experience. I have had two internships - one in EHS and one this summer in GIS for a big utility company. I have also done a few projects involving landslide vulnerability, GEOINT imagery analysis , and one relatively unsuccessful attempt of creating a ML model for hurricane RI. I am also currently learning Python.

I don’t know if those matter, but anyways… If I could have it my way, I would go to an atmospheric science graduate program, but I don’t think I’m as qualified in terms of my math and physics prerequisites. However, I think there are a few ways around that and would like some advice:

I could …

  1. Try to get into an Env Sc program and then specialize through research into atmospheric.

  2. Try to get into a Geography (or maybe GEOINT?) Program and then specialize through research into remote sensing/ geospatial analysis.

  3. Try to go to a Geospatial Data Analytics program for more programming/ allow me to go into a variety of industries (but could be affected by AI)

I’ve looked at a lot of schools so far: Penn State, BU, UMaryland, Colorado, CSU, U Miami, UAlbany, UCSB, John’s Hopkins, etc but they are all slightly different depending on which avenue works

I am not 100% sure what job I want in the future, but I love these areas and am interested in jobs within the fields of atmospheric science, catastrophe risk modeling, weather/ climate forecasting, imagery analysis.

I would love if anyone had any advice for me on which program they think is most achievable/ if they even make sense at all or if anyone has experience with any of these fields.

I apologize, that was longer than I wanted, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Defense industry

I have seen lots of job openings within the defense industry involving remote sensing. I feel like a lot of the work sounds really cool so I’m wondering if any people who have worked in defense have advice/ cautions/ suggestions about their work experiences?
- I would also be interested in your background/ what you studied / how you ended up working where you did
