3-year best friend, flirty texts, ignored WA but commented on my IG. Am I cooked?

Hi guys, I need some advice on a friends-to-lovers transition. I (M) have been best friends with a girl for 3 years since high school. We have hung out 1-on-1 many times (cafes, movies, museums) but it was always purely platonic. We are very close emotionally—she used to be my wingwoman, and we know each other's deep vulnerabilities.

Recently, I started feeling attracted to how critical and smart she is. On July 31st, I decided to test the waters and flirted with her over a story reply. She teasingly replied, "Haah an engineering boy is flirting with me, I’m scared." I held my frame and replied, "Why scared, am I bad?" She said, "Who knows?" and then left my last message on read. However, later that exact same day, she manually added me to the Close Friends list on her private 2nd account.

It’s been quiet for the next week. On August 11, she suddenly reached out unprompted and asked me to get Chinese food with her at night (literally initiating a dinner). She sent me a picture of her outfit, but ended up having to cancel because she was exhausted from her university orientation. She apologized profusely from bed and immediately rescheduled for the next day.

We had the dinner. It felt natural and casual like usual, but with a twist: I playfully poked her (she didn't pull away), and while sitting side-by-side, our knees touched and stayed touching for a while without her pulling away.

When she got home, we texted a bit and it was totally normal. The next day at noon, I texted her asking a functional question about a topic we forgot to finish discussing. She has now left that WhatsApp message on read for nearly 2 days.

However, at midnight, while ignoring my WhatsApp, she went out of her way to publicly leave a playful, teasing comment on my new Instagram post. (FYI, she has never commented on my posts in our 3 years of friendship before this). I replied to her comment playfully, holding my frame.

She is currently super busy and exhausted with her university orientation week. But here is why I am panicking: I noticed she just mutually followed one of the new boys from her orientation group photo on her highly private 2nd account. This is unusual because I used to be the ONLY guy allowed on that 2nd account.

What do you guys think? Is she just surviving her crazy college orientation week and pacing the romantic tension, or am I getting friendzoned while she looks for new university guys? Am I cooked? Thanks!

Not sure if I have feelings for my best friend or if I just miss her

I have a friend. She's been around since early high school, all the way through graduation. She was my wingwoman, my mental support, the person I'd just hang out with. Now that we've graduated, there's a distance, but it feels natural. We just don't have the same reasons to talk anymore.

I still text her sometimes, or reply to her stories to keep in touch. But she never replies to mine, and she hasn't texted me first since we graduated.

Lately though, I've been realizing she's the person I feel safest around. I can joke, be silly, be sad, have those deep conversations that actually give me a different way of looking at things. Most of my past relationships (even the romantic ones), people just agreed with me. They'd say "yeah" or "sure" instead of giving me a real answer that made me think. She was never like that. She'd push back and say something that surprised me.

I wouldn't say I'm in love. But if I ended up with her, I wouldn't fight it either.

Should I tell her? What do you think?

Fyi just graduated 2026
