Should I add a backyard natural gas stub-out now for possible future outdoor kitchen?

I’m buying a new construction home in DFW, Texas. The builder offers a backyard natural gas drop-in/stub-out for around $650.

I don’t have an outdoor kitchen planned immediately, but I could see myself adding a built-in grill, pizza oven, or small outdoor cooking setup later. Right now I just have a propane tank, and exchanges are about $20.

For people who built or added outdoor kitchens:

  1. Is a gas stub-out worth adding during construction even if I may not use it right away?
  2. Would not having one make a future outdoor kitchen noticeably harder or more expensive?
  3. What should I ask the builder to include now so I don’t regret it later?
  4. Does placement matter a lot for future layout flexibility?
  5. Is $650 a reasonable “do it now” price, or would you skip it until I know I’m actually building the outdoor kitchen?

I’m trying to avoid paying for upgrades I won’t use, but I also don’t want to regret skipping something that is much easier to add before the house is finished.

Natural gas line vs propane tanks: worth adding to a new build if I don’t grill constantly?

I’m buying a new build in DFW, Texas, and the builder can add a backyard natural gas drop-in/stub-out for about $650.

Right now I already have a propane tank, and tank exchange near me is about $20. I don’t grill every week, but I like the idea of maybe having a natural gas grill later, or possibly a pizza oven.

For people who switched from propane to natural gas:

  1. Was it worth it mainly for convenience?
  2. Do you miss anything about propane?
  3. Does natural gas limit grill/pizza oven options?
  4. Did having a gas line make you grill more often?
  5. Would you pay $650 upfront for the stub-out in a new build?

I’m not expecting huge savings. I’m mostly trying to decide whether the convenience and future flexibility are worth paying for now.

New build backyard natural gas stub-out: what safety/code details should I verify?

I’m buying a new construction home in DFW, Texas, and the builder offers a backyard natural gas drop-in/stub-out for about $650.

I’m considering adding it for a future natural gas grill, pizza oven, or outdoor kitchen, but I want to make sure it’s done safely and correctly. I’m not planning to DIY anything. I just want to know what to ask the builder before I approve the option.

  1. What should a proper outdoor gas stub-out include?
  2. Should there be an accessible shutoff valve at the exterior?
  3. Should it be capped if unused?
  4. Is a quick disconnect standard, or is that usually added later with the appliance?
  5. Are there pipe sizing/BTU capacity questions I should ask if I might use a grill or pizza oven later?
  6. Anything specific to placement, weather protection, inspection, or code that homeowners often overlook?

Also, is $650 a reasonable price during construction, compared to adding one after the house is finished?
