Can a fast gravel bike (like a Canyon Grail) realistically double as an Ironman bike?
I’m trying to avoid owning multiple bikes and its also expansive so I was wondering if anyone here has successfully used a performance gravel bike for triathlons, including 70.3 or full Ironman.
My current thinking is something like a Canyon Grail (or a similar fast gravel bike) with:
- second road wheelset with 28–30 mm tires
- Clip-on aerobars
A proper bike fit - Maybe a forward saddle adjustment if needed
The idea would be:
Gravel riding and bikepacking with the gravel wheels
Road training with the road wheels
Triathlons using the road wheels + aerobars
I understand it won’t be as aerodynamic as a dedicated tri/TT bike, but I’m more interested in whether it’s a practical “one-bike” solution rather than being the absolute fastest.
Has anyone here raced a 70.3 or full Ironman on a Canyon Grail, Grizl, Specialized Crux, Trek Checkpoint, or another gravel bike? How did it compare to a road bike or tri bike in terms of comfort, speed, and overall experience?
If you were buying one bike to do gravel, road riding, and Ironman training/racing, would you go this route, or would you choose an endurance road bike instead?
