Best place to watch today’s solar eclipse near Keswick – Castlerigg Stone Circle or somewhere else?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently staying in Keswick and I'm hoping to watch today's solar eclipse. I'm considering Castlerigg Stone Circle as a place to view it, but as I'm new to the Lake District, I'd really appreciate some local advice.

Would Castlerigg be a good location to watch the eclipse from? It looks like it has a fairly open view of the sky, but I'm not sure how suitable it will be for the direction of the eclipse or how busy it's likely to get.

Parking is probably my biggest question. What are my options for parking at or near Castlerigg Stone Circle? I'd prefer to drive and park rather than walk there from Keswick.

I'm planning on doing the Catbells hike earlier in the day, then visiting a few other places before finishing my day by watching the eclipse. Having the car with me would therefore make things much easier.

I'm expecting the popular viewpoints to be particularly busy today, so if recommending Castlerigg, I'd really appreciate suggestions for where exactly to park, including alternative or overflow options if the closest parking areas are full. I'm happy to arrive early if necessary.

And if Castlerigg isn't the best place to watch the eclipse, where else around Keswick or the surrounding Lake District would you recommend? I'm staying at a hotel in Keswick but I'm completely happy to drive elsewhere for a better view.

For any alternative locations, it would be really helpful if you could also mention where you'd recommend parking, as I'd rather have a couple of options planned in advance than spend the evening driving around looking for a space!

Any local knowledge, viewing spots, parking tips or advice for today would be massively appreciated.

Thanks so much in advance!

Solar eclipse in the Lake District – any gatherings or good viewing spots near Keswick?

Hi everyone!

My wife and I will be visiting the Lake District for a week and staying around Keswick. It’ll be our first time in the area, and we’d love to experience the solar eclipse while we’re there.

Does anyone know if there are any organised eclipse gatherings, viewing events or astronomy groups doing something in or around Keswick/the wider Lake District? Any links would be really appreciated!

We’re also completely open to finding somewhere ourselves to watch it. Since we don’t know the area, where would you recommend for a great view of the eclipse?

I was wondering whether climbing a fell or mountain and watching it from higher up would be a good idea (weather permitting, of course). If so, are there any particular fells, hikes or viewpoints you’d recommend that have a wide, unobstructed view of the sky?

Alternatively, would somewhere around Derwentwater or another lake/open area actually be a better option?

We’ll have a car and are happy to travel outside Keswick, so recommendations anywhere within a reasonable drive would be welcome. I’d love to hear all the options – organised events, mountains/fells, lakes, viewpoints or any lesser-known spots that might be good.

Thanks in advance! Really looking forward to experiencing it in the Lake District. 🌒

First time visiting the Lake District – best hikes, views and things to do around Keswick?

Hi everyone!

My wife and I are visiting the Lake District for the first time and staying for a week in the Keswick area. We’ve booked an apartment there and would love some recommendations from people who know the area well.

Our main priority is getting out and exploring. We’re looking for some of the best hikes and fells with stunning views. We’re reasonably open when it comes to difficulty, so I’d love to hear which walks you think are genuinely worth doing, especially for a first visit.

A few things already on our list:

  • Hiking Catbells
  • Visiting the Lake District Wildlife Park
  • Hiring a motorboat on Derwentwater
  • Exploring Keswick and the surrounding area

What other hikes, viewpoints, attractions or fun activities would you recommend around Keswick? We’ll have a car, so we’re also happy to drive to nearby areas if there’s somewhere particularly worth visiting.

As it’s our first time in the Lake District, I’d really appreciate any practical tips too. In particular, if you recommend a hike, could you also suggest the best place to park/start the walk? Any advice on parking, getting around, places to avoid at busy times, or things a first-time visitor should know would be really helpful.

We’ve got a full week, so plenty of time to explore!

Thanks in advance for any recommendations 🙂

Best places to view the solar eclipse near Keswick (12 August 2026)? First trip to the Lake District!

Hi everyone,

I'll be travelling to the Lake District next week (week commencing 10 August) and staying in the Keswick area for the whole week. I've just found out that there will be a solar eclipse visible across the UK on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, and I'd love to make the most of it.

As this is my first visit to the Lake District, everything will be completely new to me. I was wondering if anyone could recommend the best places near Keswick to view the eclipse. Are there any organised events, viewing meet-ups, or observatories that will be hosting anything special?

I was also considering going for a hike that day. Would it be worth climbing one of the fells for a better view, or would I be better off watching from somewhere more accessible? If you have any recommendations for good viewpoints that aren't too crowded, I'd really appreciate them.

I'd also love to hear any general tips for visiting the Lake District or for viewing a solar eclipse safely.

Thanks in advance - I'm really looking forward to visiting!
