Modern Pocket Options?
To start off, I am aware that this will likely upset the diehard kilt traditionalists, but I've seen this community be quite supportive and helpful, so I hope you'll extend me some grace...
I've got an appointment with a kilt maker scheduled and I'm looking forward to purchaskng my first kilt, made just for me. I intend to wear it as an everyday item, fairly casual and not too much fuzz. I have tried friend's kilts and loved the comfort and refreshing style of it, which convinced me to get my own.
Now, while I love the idea of getting a kilt for myself, I don't see myself wearing a sporran. I just can't quite bring myself to like the look of them. However, I do need a practical way to store my keys and phone on the go, so I've been thinking about pockets... My initial idea is to just ask for side pockets, similar to front pockets in regular trousers. However, looking into this, it appears that this is not a very common feature... I only found a couple stores selling relatively cheap casual kilts with such integrated, hidden pockets on the sides. So I'm a little embarrassed to even ask the kilt maker for this.
Why aren't pockets more common in modern kilt designs? Would they create problems with how the fabric falls and looks, or is it simply a matter of sticking to traditional design patterns? And if they're a bad idea, what other good options are there that would not get too much in the way like big external pockets on utility kilts or a front-worn sporran?
Appreciate any advise and feedback!
