Rhinedottir’s name might be a reference to the Rhinemaidens and the Rheingold

I’ve been studying Icelandic for about three months, and I recently had a realization about Rhinedottir’s name and her role in the lore.

In Iceland, people generally don’t use family surnames in the traditional sense; instead, the country still largely follows a patronymic naming system. Rather than inheriting a family name, a person’s surname is typically formed from their father’s name (or, increasingly, their mother’s) with “-dóttir” added for daughters, literally meaning “daughter of.”

If we apply this linguistic rule to Rhinedottir, her name can literally be interpreted as “Daughter of the Rhine” (“Rhine” being the English exonym for the river).

This might be a direct reference to Germanic mythology and Richard Wagner’s opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung), which features the Rhinemaidens (Rheintöchter in German).

In the mythological tradition, the Rhinemaidens are water nymphs tasked with guarding the Rheingold, the gold of the Rhine. And, as we know, Rhinedottir’s alchemical codename in Genshin Impact is literally “Gold.”

In Wagner’s cycle, the gold is stolen from the Rhine and used to forge a ring of immense power, setting in motion a chain of events that ultimately culminates in the Götterdämmerung—the Twilight of the Gods and the downfall of the divine order.

This seems to mirror remarkably well how Gold’s actions and her creation of Abyssal monsters contributed to the fall of Khaenri’ah and the deaths of several gods during the Cataclysm 500 years ago.

If this theory has already been proposed before, I apologize, it must have slipped past me.

How can Rhinedottir be a Sinner and the Shade of Life?

Aside from the fact that I’m vampirically fascinated by her, I wonder: did Rhinedottir willingly devour the Heart of Naberius, knowing that Celestia would trap her in such an important role - which would explain why she’s helping the Tsaritsa with her plan - meaning it was driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge and transcendent power? Or did she actually desire to inherit the divine function itself?

I probably misunderstood some of her lore or mistranslated a few passages, but I came across a post on this subreddit discussing Rhinedottir being simultaneously associated with the Hexenzirkel, the Sinners, and the Shades, and I initially assumed these roles weren’t necessarily in conflict with one another.

Thinking about it more, though, I started wondering: could the Heavenly Principles really have accepted Rhinedottir usurping the role of the Shade of Life despite her connection to the Abyss? Did they simply tolerate it in silence, or did the Primordial One somehow “trap” Rhinedottir in that role precisely because of her own insatiable desire?

I’d really appreciate some help and might be able to clear this up for me. Thanks!

Nicole, the Hexenzirkel, and Genshin’s habit of leaving lore threads unresolved

Hi everyone, I hope you’re having a good day, and I genuinely wish you all the best.

Before writing this, I’d like to make a brief disclaimer: I’m not really the kind of person who shares their thoughts this publicly, but I don’t really have anyone close to me I can talk to or discuss this with, so please forgive me if this ends up being a bit messy or confusing.

Over the years, Genshin has increasingly become one of my biggest passions, to the point where I’ve become almost obsessively fascinated by its characters and lore. This became especially true when the concept of the Hexenzirkel was introduced: witches (I personally prefer collectively referring to them this way) with abilities comparable to those of gods, who take part in events and matters of worldwide importance.

Over time, the story and background of these witches became even more important to me than the main lore itself, because of how much it kept me glued to theories, stories, and rereading certain dialogues. When I found out that Alice, and especially Nicole, would be part of the “cast” of the historical segment of the Nod-Krai patches, I couldn’t wait to see her and discover new information about her. In fact, on the very first day of Nicole’s release, I pulled for her immediately, thinking about what secrets she might reveal to us about this world and the witches of the Hexenzirkel.

For me, being able to play Nicole felt like the first step toward discovering even a small fragment more of this vast universe, precisely because she represents someone who (among the current playable characters) knows far more than most others. A bit like when we got the chance to play Tartaglia or Scaramouche, who gave us information, even if generic and filtered through their own perspective, about the Fatui.

Because of this interest, though, I ended up feeling a little disappointed.

Her voicelines feel somewhat generic. Her character story is extremely interesting, but sparse when it comes to what is happening in the present. And there isn’t even a single voiceline about Barbeloth, whom we’ve had the chance to learn about through more indirect means, or even Rhinedottir, of whom we’ve seen a representation and heard the voice through Nahida’s consultation with the Shades.

It feels really strange and disappointing to me that there was no real mention of characters we’ve only had crumbs about for years.

I’m confident that more information will be added in a second part, but I feel like a big opportunity was missed here: the chance to give players even a glimpse of what the members of the Hexenzirkel think of one another, and why not, to create a bit more hype around this storyline.

And personally, I think this has started to wear me down a little. It feels like the writers of Genshin Impact have been opening, and are still opening, many small narrative arcs that never truly get closed, or that they don’t seem to want to explore in any real depth.

To be honest, this is very probably just my own feeling, and it’s probably because I became so passionate and deeply interested in this particular segment of the lore that I wanted to learn more about it. Most likely, no one else cares that much, or they may find this complaint superficial. Still, I felt the need to express this sense of disappointment toward this latest patch, and more generally toward the direction Genshin Impact seems to be taking with its lore.

Anyway, I’d really like to hear your thoughts. As I said before, it’s probably my own fault for expecting, or even “demanding”, information about one specific part of this universe.

I hope I managed to make myself understandable. English is not my first language, and I partially used a translator to help me, so I apologize if anything I’m trying to say or describe comes across unclearly or is easy to misunderstand.

I’ll take this chance to wish all of you a good day or a good evening again. Thank you for reading this post and for giving me your attention!
