Rotten Egg smell on the bottom layers of peat

I chopped live sphagnum on a wet peat moss 2 weeks ago, and on the pictures we can see progress, but I noticed little bit sulfur smell when I checked it and I took little part of peat from the bottom and it has rotten egg smell. Peat layer is about 1 cm. How should I treat it?

Hey everyone, I’m a total beginner and I just ordered some live Sphagnum moss from China because I want to grow it and use it for my tree propagation and bonsai work. I had to order it from so far away because I couldn't find anyone selling live sphagnum here in Georgia. I really need to scale this up and propagate it successfully so I have a steady supply for my projects, but honestly, I have no idea how to start. It’s going to be in the mail for about 3 weeks, so I’m worried it’ll arrive dead or covered in mold. What should be my very first steps when the package arrives? I’ve heard it needs special water and can’t just take stuff from the tap, but that’s all I know. Does it need a closed box or open air? How much light is too much? Any simple tips for someone starting from absolute zero would be a huge help. Thanks!
