This past Tuesday I came in to discuss my plan for maintenance. My doctor told me not to lose anymore weight, and that future use of drugs like Zepbound is only on an intermittent basis. He has instructed me to drop to 7.5mgs every 14 days for the next 2 months, then once a month for 2-3 months, then discontinue using it. He then gave me a prescription with 6 refills to use if I gain enough weight to have a BMI of 30. That’s the intermittent use criteria.
He is an excellent doctor. Arguably the best I’ve ever had, except when it comes to understanding the need for a lifetime of treatment with Zepbound when you have a metabolic disorder. Nothing I said seemed to connect. His position is that the danger of pancreatitis is very real, and the risk increases as you continue to use glp1’s without having a clinical condition that meets the criteria for prescribing them for treatment like obesity. diabetes, cardiac issues, or sleep apnea.
There is no way in HELL I’m going to do that. I have lost 92 lbs. I am 4 lbs away from my goal, which I set last July. To get here without Zepbound was not possible. I helped the process along by cutting out all junk and high sugary foods, and limiting my daily caloric intake to 1200 - 1400. I have been going to the gym religiously since August. and I document everything in Lose It! and Shotsy. My BP, HR, eGFR, A1G, and Cholesterol are all normal!! I have worked very hard to get here, and I’m staying.
I just do not understand how he can tell me to do something so contrary to the process that got me here, seemingly sabotaging my continued success.
Any and all advice is welcome. I’m anxious and afraid this has all been for nothing.
Thank you in advance for contributing to this discussion.
