IT graduate offered a PLC/Industrial Automation role. Worth making the switch?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some honest career advice.

I'm an international graduate living in Perth, Australia. My background is a Bachelor's in Computer Science, an MBA in Finance, and I recently completed a Master's in Information Technology. I've been offered an opportunity in industrial automation. The role involves PLC programming, system automation, electrical/electronic control systems, and related automation work.

Most of my experience and studies have been in software development, databases, QA, and general IT. I don't have a formal electrical or electronics engineering background, so I'm wondering whether this would be a smart career move.

A few questions:

  • Is PLC programming something someone with a Computer Science/IT background can realistically learn?
  • How difficult is the learning curve?
  • Is industrial automation a good long-term career in Australia?
  • Would taking this role limit my opportunities in software/IT later, or could it actually broaden my career?
  • If you were in my position, would you take the opportunity?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone working in automation, controls, or PLC programming, especially if you've transitioned from an IT or software background.

Thanks in advance!

Career Transition Help

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from people with experience in this field regarding my career. I'm an international graduate based in Perth. My background includes a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, an MBA in Finance, and a recently completed Master's in Information Technology.

I've been offered an opportunity to work in industrial automation, mainly involving electrical and electronic systems, system automation, PLC programming, and related technologies.

Although my academic background is in IT, I find this opportunity quite interesting. I'm wondering if it would be a good career move and whether transitioning into this field is realistic.

Has anyone here made a similar transition from IT/software into automation or PLC programming? How steep is the learning curve, and what are the long-term career prospects in Australia?

I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences you can share. Thank you!
