A celebratory story with a Sinn 556i RS
Eleven years ago I was in the midst of my early twenties, uncertain and exploring. Through a mentor, I discovered an interest in watches. I admired their aesthetics, function, and mechanics, but more importantly fell for the feeling of having a living creature strapped to your wrist. Yet, cost and the simple reality that a Casio F91w provides the function of time on my wrist more accurately and more affordably than any mechanical watch prevented me from spending funds on watches. Still, I discovered the Sinn 556iRS all those years ago and thought, “maybe someday.”
Two years ago, in a new decade and stage of my life, I returned to college to pursue a master of arts in teaching while dangling the carrot of “maybe the Sinn when I graduate.” I began a new job as a teacher while attending an accelerated graduate program. In the second year of the program, my wife and I had our first son, bringing untold amounts of love into our lives. Needless to say, it has been a fulfilling, exhausting year…
Last weekend I graduated. My wife and parents gifted me the Sinn… A watch to celebrate the accomplishments of this past year, with my family and my career. It will go forth on my wrist through many new adventures with our son, as it did today on his first ever paddle. Right now, I am reveling in the excitement of having this new thing and the feeling of having accomplished a goal. The infatuation will fade as it may for all things, but the enduring presence and constant companionship will remain.
