Testing this combo out. The Reference sounds really good. The mids absolutely shine. The bass is natural. Not bloated or muddy. The treble sparkles. I really like this tuning.

The Protocol Max is a confusing device though. It sounds good, looks good, and is well built. The limited EQ process is disappointing. Having to connect via a PC and only being able to set one profile on it is a hassle.

All in all, thus far the sound of them paired is neutral and clean. The synergy between them is excellent.

Edit: The Walk Play app makes changing the EQ profile easier.
