2 Weeks Post-Op ORIF
2 weeks post-op ORIF for a comminuted trimalleolar fracture-dislocation + syndesmosis injury.
Thought I’d share my progress so far because this subreddit has honestly helped me mentally over the past couple weeks.
First 2 photos are the original injury in ED before surgery. Completely dislocated ankle after a rugby injury. Ended up needing ORIF with a fibula plate, medial mal screw, and syndesmotic screw (3rd photo).
Had my 2-week post-op review today. Surgeon said everything is healing nicely overall. Most stitches came out, but they left 6 stitches on the outside incision because they want it to heal a bit more before moving me into a CAM boot. So I’m back in a cast for another week.
Doctor also checked dorsiflexion and said it was good for this stage, just limited/stiff which is expected. New cast has my foot sitting at 90° now to stop the Achilles tightening up, which definitely feels weird compared to the old position.
Biggest struggles so far:
- sleeping (finally improving now)
- random pinching/zapping pains around the sutures
- swelling when the leg is down too long
- mentally dealing with going from rugby/gym/work to basically immobile overnight.
I’ve been trying to stay on top of recovery with:
- high protein intake (~120g-150g daily)
- collagen/protein drinks
- hydration
- keeping the leg elevated
- strict non-weight bearing
Would appreciate hearing from anyone with similar injuries:
• how long until you got into a boot?
• when did walking start feeling normal again?
• how was recovery after syndesmotic screw removal?
Appreciate this community heaps 🙌🏽.
