Look for Guidance

I have been going to the local cosmetology school here for 6 yrs. I had total grey hair. They recommended cutting it to should or neck long which was ok. And dye it lighter than my natural hair. They use All-Nutrient products. So they first did it in an 8P and it was ok but I guess cause my natural here is super deep brown, the 8P turned it into a like light/medium brown. I, not realizing that your natural pigment commands some things when dying. I was expecting it to look like the swatch. So one of the times I went in... I decided that instead of getting all kinds of damaged ends that I would get a short bob cut. We also did I think it is called a bleach out?? Anyway then the 8P seemed to come threw better. One of the teachers a few times later, recommended going to 8N, so I said ok and wound up liking it and we have been doing it ever since. Well, my hair was growing and grey was coming on... it was about 2" long and finally made time to get back there. I went for my root touch up.
They were out of 8N and mixed 9N and 7N. Well as it was developing, I thought, this is going to be real dark and it is. So the teacher said, let me do a wash on you. She took baking soda and 10 developer and washed my roots with it.... but it did nothing and it looks like I am a natural brown hair (which I use to be before grey came) and I haven't bothered to dye my roots blonde.

SO, my question, what can I do to help this get lighter. Somewhere I read to wash it with Head and shoulders.... but my hair is thinning big time the last 10+ years and I don't know how dried out that will make my hair. I live in the desert. Your help is GREATLY appreciated.
