Oriental Arbor-vitae

Oriental Arbor-vitae

Broken branch from an Oriental. Literally just went to get it because I saw it when I was coming home from work. Felt like I could save it? I’m going to try to grow roots from this guy and see where it goes. What do you all think? I heard they are not seen as bonsai as others but this what we do right???

Bald Cypress

Hello everyone, I recently got a bald cypress cutting. I have a couple of questions for anybody out there that has some experience with these guys.

Do I need to submerge my cutting in water so it roots faster or do I first need to wait for it to root and then keep it submerged in water? I know that they like to be submerged in water but I’m not sure if it’s only once they have roots or if I can do it while trying to grow roots.

Thank you for reading my essay 🙂‍↕️.

I got this Monterey Cypress that I thought would be a perfect contender for a forest.

  1. make sure your pot has enough holes (more than 3 is ok) you will want this to fully drain.
  2. the tree is planted sideways with main roots being on the right side (removed about 60% of roots) (styled tree)
  3. peeled the bottom of the tree to promote new root grow (you can add root growth powder on it if you like) imo it does make a difference.
  4. added sphagnum moss to the bottom of the container.
  5. secured tree on top of it.
  6. added bonsai soil and made sure to fill in the crevices
  7. watered tree and made sure it drained fully (if you make new holes on a plastic container make sure that you poke from from the inside) sometimes if you poke from bottom it will create a weird hole and your pot won’t drain it fully (root rot)
  8. update y’all in six months when I will be (hopefully) repotting based on root growth.

It’s an Art. Be creative. GL
