I've gone overboard in the last 2 months.
After all this I would say my favorites and the ones I'd recommend to everyone are:
- Kuru Toga Roulette - I love the texture of the grip, it has a bit more weight to the standard without being too heavy. Highly recommend this especially for someone that wants a more "premium" feeling Kuru Toga but doesn't want to spend $45 on the Kuru Toga Metal. However the benefit of the kuru toga is lost if you write in cursive or don't pick up the pencil enough, the kuru toga gives the tip a bit of wobble and I find having to remove the cap to use the eraser annoying which leads me to...
- Tombow MONO Graph Fine Mechanical Pencil - I love the grip, feel and heft of this. No kuru toga engine but the twist out eraser is functional and super fidgety. Also it has a weight that slides down to prevent the the button from moving when you use the eraser which is a nice feature. This blue is a special edition and was for me totally worh it (if you can't tell blue is my favorite color) but the standard black or silver are totally worth it at $14 USD.
Noteable mentions or cool things:
- DelGuard GR - This fat grip is by far the most comfortable for long sessions, they did their homework. If you're going to write a lot in one session I would highly recommend trying one. However I hate that the grip is a dust magnet. See picture. (I ditched the Kuru Toga Alpha-Gel pencil from my collection because it's an even worse dust magnet)
- DelGuard - Something about this grip for this is super pleasant to me just not enough to beat my top 2.
- Delguard LX - If you want a pencil with some more heft, don't care about the Kuru Toga, are ok with a capped eraser and you often break your graphite this is the pencil for you.
- DelGuard ER - The easer mechanism is super cool but I found the grip a bit too hard for me, closer to the KS than I'd like so sadly I don't think I'll use it much. If this grip was softer I think it'd be super useful.
I absolutlely hate:
- Pilot mogulair - Despite using the DelGuard protect system it feels somehow much cheaper than the regular Del-Guard to me. I can't seem to find a way to lock the shaker mechanism so good luck if you carry this in a bag.
- Kuru Toga KS - It just feels bad. The hard plastic grip just really does not agree with me.
- Orenz - I love the feel of both the Orenz standard and Orenz Nero but I find the scratchiness of their pipe-sliding protect mechanism to be really unpleasant. That said I can see the appeal of retracting the tip if you carry your pencil in a pocket but I'd still rather either the Kuru Toga Pipe-Slide, Kuru Toga Advance
