1099 vs w2 as a caregiver

Hi, i just found out that caregivers are given a w2 when they are paid over a certain amount. I was hired by a family in 2011 to take care of their daughter. They told me I had to pay taxes myself and handed me a 1099. They also told me I dont qualify for overtime pay because they had hired me privately. I work 67.5 hrs a week for them. Were they supposed to give me a w2 and pay half my social security taxes while I pay the other half? I have been paying self employment taxes the whole time. I work in NYC.
