Hi everyone,
I wanted to ask for some feedback to help me choose the smart ring that best fits my needs. I’ve spent quite a bit of time researching different sources (including this subreddit and the super useful, but not totally up to date, benchmark/comaprison by u/gomo-gomo), but I still feel like I can’t make a fully informed decision.
Right now, I see three main candidates: Oura Gen4, Ultrahuman Pro, and RingConn.
What I’m looking for is a smart ring that provides high-quality data (as accurate as the current technology allows). I’m not too interested in workout tracking, as I’m already aware of the limitations there. In short, any good ring that reliably supports HR, HRV, and sleep tracking would work for me.
From what I’ve understood so far:
- Oura seems, maybe due to its marketing or being a first mover, to have the largest number of third-party studies on accuracy (e.g., sleep stages compared to PSG, HR, etc.).
- Ultrahuman and RingConn seem to have largely closed the gap on the hardware side, but I’m concerned their data processing algorithms and R&D might still lag behind Oura (though I could be wrong). I’ve seen reports of inaccuracies or inconsistencies, especially in sleep stage tracking and HR/HRV. If I'm correct, I think it would be a good move for them to try getting more of such studies, in the end these items are sold as "health indicators" of some sort, and it's hard to gain this by trust.
Since the value of the ring (for me) really depends on the quality of the data it provides, I’d love to hear your personal experiences to validate whether my impression reflects the reality.
In short: is the Oura subscription actually "a tax" because of superior algorithms and expertise, or is it mostly good marketing?
On the other hand, Ultrahuman doesn’t seem to emphasize major improvements in sleep accuracy or similar features in its latest Pro launch. Its main selling points appear to be the rechargeable case (which I understand is useful, but not my top priority) and battery life (which makes sense given past issues). Given their latest release date I was hoping of more advancements on hw/feature-wide.
I’m also ignoring past battery hardware issues, since they seem to have affected all brands in one way or another and will hopefully be resolved in newer models.
