Going back to study Physiotherapy as a Mature Student - Ireland

Hi everyone,

I’m a 37-year-old male based in the south of Ireland and I’m seriously considering returning to third-level education as a mature student to study Physiotherapy. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, but the whole process feels quite overwhelming, so I’m hoping to get some advice from people who may have gone through something similar.

I already hold a BA degree from DCU, but I don’t come from a science background. At 18, I chose a university course/career path that ultimately wasn’t the right fit for me in the real world, and now that I’m older, I really want to make the right decision this time around.

Because I have my own family commitments in the south of the country, my realistic option for an undergraduate route would probably be the 4-year Physiotherapy degree in UL, so I could still remain close to them. However, I’m struggling to figure out the best pathway into the profession as a mature student. I’ve contacted university administration teams, but I honestly find it difficult to get clear guidance or detailed information from them.

I’m unsure about things such as:

  • Whether mature applicants are still heavily assessed on Leaving Cert points/results
  • Who the best person would be to contact within UL for proper guidance
  • Whether my existing degree/background would help or hinder my application
  • What I can do now to strengthen my chances of getting accepted

I’ve also looked into the MSc Physiotherapy route in UL and considered sitting the GAMSAT, but because I don’t have a science or health-related undergraduate background, I’m not sure how realistic that pathway would be for me either.

I’ve looked at UCC as well, although from what I understand, their MSc route may require a stronger science background.

What I’d really appreciate advice on is:

  • The best pathway into Physiotherapy in Ireland as a mature student
  • Whether undergraduate or MSc entry makes more sense in my situation
  • Any preparatory courses (online or in-person) that would help build my knowledge before applying
  • Any experience people have had applying to UL/UCC as mature students
  • Whether there are foundation or access courses worth doing beforehand

I’m fully aware this would be a huge commitment financially, academically, and personally, so I’m trying to make the most informed decision possible before taking the leap.

Any advice, guidance, or personal experiences would honestly be hugely appreciated.

Thanks so much.
