I've been learning banjo for 1.5 years now relying only on virtual instruction - first Eli Gilbert's 30 days of banjo, then Tony Trishka's course on Artist Works. But honestly, I can't play banjo. I can follow a simple tab, but I couldn't tread water in a jam session with toddlers.
I need in-person lessons, but I guess I live in a banjo desert. I've tried two different teachers, but I'm not convinced either one of them plays banjo. They had ones in their studio, but neither bothered to pick it up during my lesson - one used a piano to teach me how scales work and the other spent most of our 30 minutes talking about counting off in a jam session while holding a guitar. I said goodbye to both after our first lesson and never went back.
What am I supposed to do? I'm confident I'll never learn to play without in-person instruction, but I don't see how either of my options are going to help me either. I just want to play along to Country Gentlemen albums in my basement.
