Inspired to be an Intercessor
Reading Genesis 18–19 with the Recovery Version footnotes opened up something I honestly never would’ve seen on my own. Genesis 18:17 says God was considering whether to “hide” His intention to destroy Sodom from Abraham, and the footnote explains why He didn’t: God was seeking an intercessor.
The note points out that although God intended to judge Sodom, His heart was actually concerned for Lot. And in His fellowship with Abraham, God revealed His desire in a hidden way (without ever mentioning Lot’s name) so Abraham would intercede according to God’s burden.
The real key is Genesis 19:29—God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out from the midst of the overthrow. Lot was saved because of Abraham’s intercession. And that rescue mattered far beyond the moment, because Lot’s descendant Ruth (great-grandmother of King David) appears in Matthew 1 in the genealogy of Christ.
I never connected any of this before. The Recovery Version footnotes didn’t just explain the passage; they revealed the spiritual significance behind it. And what struck me personally was a realization that God must still be seeking intercessors today to whom He can express His desire and pave the way for the accomplishing of His will. I’m inspired to be such a person, to be useful to God for His purpose!
