The Museum of Culpeper History holds an annual event in conjunction with the Luck Stone Quarry to visit the quarry and see the dinosaur tracks that were discovered in the quarry from the mid 1970s to 1989. I finally secured tickets to the event after failing the last couple years and so I was finally able to see the footprints myself this past Saturday. The site contains footprints from the Late Triassic, from creatures who traversed the muddy shores of the ancient Lakes along the Culpeper Basin. The most common footprints are from Coelophysis, though there are footprints from Aetosaurs and Phytosaurs as well. I highly recommend a visit if you’re in the area when they host the event, they bring a couple paleontologists and one of the quarry workers who discovered the footprints to help answer questions about the site so it’s a very cool experience for both young and old dinosaur enthusiasts.
