EdenText: an open-source reimplementation of Word, rebuilt in Svelte. Opens and saves .docx and .odt entirely in your browser, with no server.
Think of draw.io, but for documents: Open a URL and start writing. It also works offline as an installable app, and the first load is under 2 MB (for most languages).
What it does:
- Opens and saves .docx and .odt, and exports PDF, optimised for high compatibility with Word and LibreOffice
- Real pages: headers and footers, footnotes, columns, page and line numbering, mirrored margins for books
- Styles with inheritance, tables with spreadsheet-style formulas, table of contents, cross-references, citations and bibliography, LaTeX formulas, images, ...
- Track changes, threaded comments, spell check in 8 languages
- Optional AI assistant with your own provider or a local model. Requests go straight to the provider, and you can switch it off entirely
- UI in 11 languages, desktop builds for macOS, Windows and Linux, and self-hosting with a single docker run
Why: I wanted a word processor as easy to reach as a website and as private as a local app, built on open formats instead of somebody's cloud.
Stack: Svelte 5, TipTap/ProseMirror, TypeScript. Licensed under AGPL-3.0.
It's still in beta. Got a document that doesn't look right? I'd love to see it. Drop it (or a stripped-down copy) into an issue and it becomes a test case.
