Wrapping metal wire in leather?

I want to make a horseshoe style ring holder pendant necklace, like in the photo. I'm using 2mm wire, I already made a prototype, and it works nicely. But, I'm worried about the metal on metal contact scratching or denting the ring over time, so I was thinking of wrapping the wire in leather.

I don't have any experience working with leather.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience on this? My first thought was to wrap it with some adhesive basically the same as a baseball bat handle, but teenytiny. But I feel like, at that scale, the thickness would be too thin to use real leather. In order for the pendant to still be functional, the wrap itself will need to be very thin, like <0.5mm. In this case I'm not against using synthetic, just for this part (the necklace cord itself is going to be real deer leather).
