Small wording changes in my resume changed the response rate completely

I used to think resume quality mostly depends on design and experience.

But recently I realised wording matters much more than I expected.

For months I was applying with one single resume for SEO, content and digital marketing roles. Hardly getting replies. I genuinely thought market is completely dead.

Then one recruiter told me my resume looked too generic and wasn’t matching the actual job descriptions closely enough.

After that I started tailoring resumes based on the role itself. Later I also tested Applyzio [applyzio.com] because doing all these edits manually everyday became too tiring after some point.

What surprised me was seeing how small keyword and phrasing changes made the resume look much more relevant for specific openings.

Now atleast recruiter calls and assessment mails have increased compared to before.

Feels like many resumes are probably getting filtered out even when candidates are actually qualified.

I finally understood why I was not even reaching interview rounds

For long time I thought my interview skills were the problem.

Then I realised the bigger issue was I was not even reaching the interview stage properly.

I was applying almost daily for marketing and SEO related roles but most applications were disappearing into complete silence. No rejection, no OA, no recruiter call, nothing.

One day one recruiter told me very casually that my resume was too generic for the roles I was applying to. That honestly surprised me because I thought experience matters more than wording. After that I started tailoring resumes properly according to JD requirements. Later I also tested Applyzio [applyzio.com] because manually changing resumes every single day after work was becoming exhausting.

The interesting part was not the automation. It was seeing how much keyword alignment and role specific wording actually changes the chances of getting noticed.

Now atleast I am reaching screening rounds and interviews more consistently compared to before. Feels strange that getting the interview itself has become harder than preparing for it.

My friend thought he was unemployable for almost 3 months

One of my friends was applying for jobs almost everyday after getting laid off from a startup.

At first he was very confident because he already had experience and decent skills. But after some weeks the confidence completely disappeared because there were barely any replies. Every morning he used to wake up and check mails hoping for something and there was almost nothing except rejection mails.

I checked his process one day and realised he was sending same resume everywhere. Same PDF for SEO jobs, growth jobs, content roles, performance marketing roles, everything.

Then slowly we started changing resumes based on the job description itself. Later he tested Applyzio [applyzio.com] because manually editing resumes everyday became too frustrating for him. What shocked both of us was not the auto apply part. It was how different the resume looked after matching it properly with the role.

Within some weeks he atleast started getting recruiter calls and assessment rounds again. Not perfect results obviously, but mentally he became much better because there was finally some movement.

Honestly feels like job searching itself has become a separate skill now.

ATS filtering is actually worse than I thought

I genuinely thought recruiters were ignoring my applications.

For almost 2 months I was applying with same resume everywhere. SEO roles, content roles, digital marketing roles, even some growth positions. Hardly any replies. Then one HR friend told me most resumes are getting filtered before anybody even sees them.

After that I started changing resumes based on JD and honestly doing it manually everyday became too much headache after some point.

Recently tested Applyzio because I wanted to see whether ATS optimisation tools are actually useful or just another AI trend. Surprisingly the matched resumes were looking much better than what I was sending earlier. Not saying suddenly I started getting tons of interviews. But atleast now I am getting assessment mails and recruiter replies sometimes instead of complete silence.

Feels like job hunting itself has become a full time job now.
