Hi everyone, I’m a 28 year old single mom with an 8 year old daughter. I already have a reliable childcare plan in place and recently earned my bachelor’s degree in Health Science with a focus in Health Information Technology.

Even with my degree, I still feel financially behind sometimes, and joining the United States Air Force has stayed in the back of my mind for a while because of the benefits and long term stability like affordable healthcare, the GI Bill, and VA home loan opportunities.

My biggest question is: for those of you who are active duty and have children, was it worth the sacrifice? I’d really appreciate honest feedback and personal experiences from parents who are currently enlisted or have served while raising kids.

I do plan on speaking with a recruiter again. The last recruiter I talked to told me that because I was treated for anxiety and depression back in 2023, I may not be able to choose my own job if I joined. I haven’t received treatment since then and I’m doing fine now.

So now I’m trying to figure out whether it makes sense to potentially let the military choose my path, or if I should just continue building my civilian career and wait until I have more control over my options.

Any advice or insight would honestly help a lot.
