I sat on a rock and watched you from the river bank
Smiling and enjoying the sun and your friends
Shirtless and effortless
You seem to love life in a softer way
Than I can
Carelessly
I listen to the birds and watch the river bend
Around the rock that’s cold on the bottoms
Of the feet I always use to walk away
You seem to glance and say why not just stay
I imagine
And I don’t know how
You laugh and go back to the world
I can’t let myself in
The river pushing steadily down stream
I take in the air, a breath
and gently
Sadly, smile at the thought of you
The birds the only thing
Really there

I am the door that keeps you out
I am the wall, the barricade, the force
That stops you from entering.
I tell you this.
You won’t get any closer
You will teeter on the edge of me
Only to realize that walkway
Has a solid glass blockade I put up
You’ll bump your nose on it
A million times
You won’t get in.
No one does.
You’ll look up reach for that door knob
And when you sling it open
And look around
I’m already gone.
