Estimator development

Our shop currently has one person doing all of the machining estimating. We are relatively automated with an ERP and use Paperless Parts. We typically quote 30 projects a week and typically 60 to 100 unique part numbers. This growing both in volume and complexity.

We need to increase our capacity and redundancy.

What do you think would be a better approach. Develop an experienced machinist from the floor to be the estimator or take a QA manager that has a machining background and customer interaction experience and train them?
