Joining TIFR DTP this August — looking for advice on making the most of the environment early on.

Hi everyone,

My qualifications/background: I’ll be joining TIFR DTP as a PhD student this August.

I wanted to ask current students/alumni (or people familiar with the department) for some advice on how to make the most of the early PhD years there.

My current interests are broadly in high energy theory — especially QFT, gravity/holography, and string-theory-adjacent topics — though I’m still open-minded and expect my interests to evolve once I’m exposed to more areas and seminars.

I had a few questions regarding the general culture and how students usually navigate things early on:

* How do students typically approach choosing an advisor/group in DTP?

* Is it common to interact with multiple faculty members before settling on a direction?

* Are there particular seminars, reading groups, or activities that incoming students should prioritize?

* How broad should one try to stay during the first year before specializing?

* What habits or approaches tend to distinguish students who do well there?

* Are there common mistakes incoming students make that are worth avoiding?

* More generally, if you could give one piece of advice to an incoming theory student at TIFR, what would it be?

I’d also be happy to hear about people’s overall experiences with the research environment/culture in DTP.

Thanks a lot!!
